Savannah & Charleston

Living in Florida, we're lucky enough to have the beach anytime we want it. So this year for spring break, I wanted to do something different.

Our friends were planning a trip to Savannah and Charleston, and after a little convincing, I got Rick on board. If you know him, you know he'd choose a boat over just about any vacation, so asking him to spend a week walking around two historic cities was a bit of a stretch. I'm really glad he agreed because it ended up being a great trip!

We started in Savannah and stayed at The Alida Hotel, which was in a great location for exploring the city on foot. We happened to be there around St. Patrick's Day, so there was a lot going on. One of the funniest things we did was a ghost tour in an actual hearse. Even if ghost stories aren't your thing, it was such a fun way to see the city and hear about Savannah's history. We also visited Bonaventure Cemetery, which was beautiful and peaceful in a way that's hard to describe.

What I will remember most about both Savannah and Charleston wasn't one specific attraction. It was the trees.

I've always loved big old trees, but the live oaks covered in Spanish moss are just so pretty. I found myself constantly looking up instead of straight ahead. I probably took way too many pictures of them, but I couldn't help it. They were beautiful. On our way home we went by the famous Angel Tree. It was worth the stop if you like trees.

In Charleston we stayed at The Dewberry. The city had a different feel than Savannah, but I loved it just as much. We spent a lot of time just walking, taking in the history, wandering through neighborhoods, and stopping whenever something caught our attention. We walked by as the South Carolina Irish Historical Society was having thier event at City Hall for St Patrick’s Day. Rick and I have some Irish ancestry so that was cool to see. We also toured the USS Yorktown, which was really interesting and much bigger than I expected. My father was in the Navy and on an aircraft carrier so I was into it.

The food deserves its own mention because I don't think we had a bad meal the entire trip. Hall's Chophouse lived up to every bit of the hype. I can honestly say it was one of the best steaks I've ever had. Old money vibe with excellent service. 5 Stars.

Looking back, I think what made this trip so memorable wasn't one big moment. It was just the combination of everything. Spending time with friends, exploring cities I'd never really experienced before, eating amazing food, and a little slower pace than usual. I think Im entering my tourist era. I’ve always loved travel, but as I get older I am definitely more intential in where I vacation.

As much as I love living in Florida, and traveling out of the country, this trip reminded me that there is so much to see right here at home.
